Charts Of Accounts

Overview

The master list of every financial account your organization uses - the foundation all your other Finance reports are built on.

The Chart of Accounts is the structure behind all your accounting - every account used to record money coming in, going out, or being owed, organized into clear categories. Reports like Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet are built directly from how your accounts are set up here.

Overview

At the top of the page, you'll see:

  • Total Assets - total value of everything the organization owns

  • Total Liabilities - total amount the organization owes

  • Net Profit / (Loss) - the organization's current profit or loss position

  • Equity - total equity or capital recorded

Account categories

Every account falls into one of five categories:

  • Assets - things the organization owns: bank balances, cash, receivables, and other resources

  • Liabilities - amounts the organization owes or is obligated to pay

  • Equity / Capital - the owner's or shareholders' capital and related accounts

  • Income - accounts used to record revenue and other income

  • Expenses - accounts used to record business and operational costs

Search, filter & view

  • Search Accounts - find a specific account quickly

  • Nature Filter - filter accounts by their nature/category

  • Tree View - see accounts in a structured hierarchy (parent accounts with their sub-accounts nested underneath)

  • Flat View - see every account in one simple list, with no hierarchy

How to add a new account

  1. Click + Add Account.

  2. Enter the Account Code (e.g., 1001) and Account Name (e.g., "Cash").

  3. Select the Account Nature - Asset, Liability, Equity, Income, or Expense.

  4. Select the Account Type - this auto-fills sensible defaults based on the Account Nature you picked.

  5. Confirm the Normal Balance (Debit or Credit) and Financial Statement (e.g., Balance Sheet) - these are also auto-populated, but can be adjusted if needed.

  6. (Optional) Enter a Tally Group and Tally Ledger Name, if you export your accounts to Tally and want a specific name to appear there.

  7. Enter an Opening Balance, if applicable, and confirm the Currency (defaults to INR).

  8. Add a Description, if useful.

  9. Click Add Account.

Seed defaults

Use Seed Defaults to populate your Chart of Accounts with a standard, predefined set of accounts - a fast way to get started instead of building your account structure entirely from scratch. It only adds accounts that don't already exist, so it won't create duplicates of accounts you've already set up.
